Gonçalo Amaral's wife, Sofia Leal: "He who is right is never silent"

Sofia is seen on the SIC In-depth video viewing various blogs

Is it true that you exchanged international correspondence on the "Maddie Case"? With whom? For what purpose?

Yes, it is true. There are numerous websites on the Internet where people from the four corners of the world are interested in this case and try to find the truth. I normally correspond with Nigel Moore of McCannfiles.com, with Tony Bennett of the MadeleineFoundation.com, with the3arguidos, with Joana Morais blog. These people frequently forward messages of support to Gonçalo, and that was one of the reasons that prompted him to write the book. It was assumed that friends, the family, would support Gonçalo, but people that he has never seen and probably will never know, they had supported him, and it really affected him and showed him that "he who is right is never silent," as the confessor of our family says.

Did Gonçalo Amaral do well in applying for early retirement from the PJ?

Gonçalo had no alternative. To defend his dignity and to speak openly he had to leave the PJ. But I can say that it is a bitter retirement. He is accustomed to saying that the Maddie case was interrupted, so was his career. He would have been a policeman until his death. Inside he will always be a policeman ...

"At the end of May, Sofia, my wife, comes to the Department of Criminal Investigation, in Portimão, with a beautiful basket with flowers. Orchids, roses, gerberas, lilacs, ornated with butterflies and birds, a whole bunch on green and yellow, the colors that symbolized the search for Madeleine.

A note from my daughters was with the flowers: "Father! We love you very much, don’t forget us, but find Madeleine." (Amaral, 2008:147)

English press associates disappearance of Sara Sofia with the Maddie case

The information about Sara Sofia’s disappearance would have gone completely unnoticed in England if it hadn’t been for the intervention of a source that is close to the British authorities and to the McCann couple, who, unofficially, alerted a few journalists while stressing the fact that the investigation is under the responsibility of the PJ’s CID in Portimão, the same one that investigated the Maddie case.

The information that was forwarded to the journalists doesn’t even contain a single line about the possibility of a parental abduction, and the focus rests on the fact that Sara Sofia is of the same age as Madeleine McCann and disappeared “mysteriously” in the Algarve, the same geographical region where the British child disappeared from in May 2007.

According to the information that was offered to the English journalists, the disappearance of Sara Sofia in Portugal’s Southern region is evidence of the possible existence of a predator, a fact that the Portuguese police had excluded in Madeleine’s case.

Maddie is a national security case

In England, Leicestershire police, replying to a request from a British journalist, under legislation that regulates free access to information, refused to explain whether or not the recourse to phone tapping and the interception of electronic mail within the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case was covered by a warrant.

According to journalist Jon Clements, the police, after delaying its reply for several months alleging the need to consult other “agencies”, replied that it had no obligation whatsoever to explain under which terms any surveillance means were used in the Maddie case, due to reasons of “national security”.

Leicestershire police, which is considered to be England’s 5th best municipal police, further explained to the journalist that it was equally dispensed from replying to him, because the requested explanation could be related to other “security entities”, which, according to the legislation that regulates free access to information, equals several secret service bodies, such as MI5, MI6, GCHG, SOCA or the Special Forces.

Satellite facing Morocco at the moment when Maddie disappeared

Journalist Jon Clements’ “adventure” is not unique, given the fact that in May 2007, only a few days after Maddie disappeared, a top official at the Polícia Judiciária’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Portimão asked his English colleagues, that had been sent to Praia da Luz, for access to images from the satellites that watch over the Algarve coast.

While the request itself could be seen as normal, as satellite imagery had helped the authorities in solving one or the other more complicated case in the past, the reply was surprising. According to the “experts” that had been sent into Portugal by the British government, at the time when Madeleine McCann was taken from apartment 5A at the Ocean Club, all the satellites were turned towards the coast of Morocco.

An unfortunate “coincidence” that would end up surprising the PJ men when, months later, they saw the same “experts” defending the theory of Madeleine’s abduction into Morocco, supported on the fantasist statements from a Spanish detective agency which, in a public statement, even said it knew who had taken the little girl, why and when, promising that she would return home before Christmas.

John McCann: "It's not bad for a bunch of amateurs"

Gordon Brown has pledged his support. Last Friday John McCann was dining with friends when Downing Street called to say that the Chancellor was on the line.

Minutes later Mr McCann’s mobile – on which he takes hundreds of calls daily – ran out of power, cutting off Britain’s next Prime Minister in mid-sentence.

Yesterday morning, as Mr McCann was talking to The Times, his mobile rang again.

It was Revenue & Customs, calling at Mr Brown’s request to discuss how the fund could gain charitable status.

As John McCann points out, it is not bad for a “bunch of amateurs”.

I wonder why John McCann gave up his full time, well-paid job, so quickly after Maddie 'disappeared', despite having a mortgage, a wife and children to support?

How did he know Maddie wouldn't be found soon?

Leicestershire police refuse FOI requests on McCanns because of 'national security'

By Jon Clements on Feb 18, 09 02:55 PM

A few days ago I received an interesting letter from Leicestershire police about the Madeleine McCann investigation.

I had asked them, in July, if they had got any warrants (under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) to use surveillance powers - such as phone tapping and email interception on behalf of the Portuguese police.

The force initially stalled saying it needed to "consult other Agencies" before replying.

After a six month delay, Leicestershire has now claimed it is exempt from Freedom of Information laws in this case due to "national security".

I've put in dozens of FoI requests to police forces over the years, some you get and some you don't but "national security" is a new one on me.

To make matters even murkier, Leicestershire claimed a second exemption because the information I requested could relate to "the Security bodies".

A quick look at the FoI Act reveals "Security bodies" are MI5, MI6, GCHQ (pictured above), special forces (such as the SAS) and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

Hmm.

Despite claiming these exemptions, Leicestershire seem at pains to neither confirm nor deny they hold any information relevant to my request anyway.

Check out (slowly I suggest) the tortuous conclusion to the three page letter explaining their stance.

"It is our decision that the Leicestershire Constabulary must maintain a position of neither confirming nor denying that any relevant information is held and that this response, which neither confirms nor denies that information is held, should not be taken as conclusive evidence that the information you have requested exists or does not exist".

Thanks, but I think that is a rather long-winded way of saying Foxtrot Oscar.

However, it does beg the question just who was bugging the McCanns after they returned from Praia da Luz?

And what has the answer got to do with national security ?

Comment by Tony Bennett of The Madeleine Foundation:

Indeed, two vital new bits of information - 'national security' and 'the Security bodies'.

I would refer you to my posting just a few days ago on one of the 'Clarence' threads where I explained that a media figure had informed me in recent weeks, off the record, of these three (claimed) facts:

* Clarence Mitchell is very close to the very top brass in MI5

* Clarence Mitchell was actually described as 'being on the MI5 payroll', and

* He was said to have access to *all* of the most top secret MI5 information and thereby had access to *everything* secret about anybody who is anybody.

General Medical Council: Raj Persaud versus Gerry McCann

Raj Persaud struck off for plagiarism

Opinion piece by Doctor J regarding the difference in treatment between Raj Persaud and the McCanns

Being a doctor is being part of a club, that means ordinary rules do not apply. Being a doctor also gives you access to drugs and knowledge not available to "ordinary" people.

Being a doctor means you stick together through thick and thin, that your first loyalty is to your "profession". The rules and powers by which the GMC works, come from the Medical Act and basically, that means the GMC makes their own rules.

In 2006 it abolished elections to the Council, it is now a Government appointed body. There is one rule for doctors the GMC "likes", for example the McCanns, who are able to carry on practising, regardless of whether they are Portugese suspects or not.

There is another rule for doctors the GMC doesn't like, for example, Raj Persaud, who was the public face of psychiatry, but did not reference or attribute correctly one or two things he "wrote". The attack on him was orchestrated by the Scientologists, who have their own views on psychiatry.

I agree that what he did was wrong, but it was hardly related to the way he managed his patients. It was a matter for the publishers, not the GMC. Again that is just an opinion.

If you are coloured you are much more likely to be taken before the GMC, than if you are white, regardless of your standard of medical practice.

Kate and Gerry McCann: A likely tale

By Doctor J

The strap line of the General Medical Council is “Regulating Doctors, Ensuring Good Medical Practice”. “Good Medical Practice” means you do not prescribe for yourself or for your family except in an emergency. Every year doctors are removed from the Medical Register because they do this.

Nonetheless, doctors do prescribe medicine for themselves, their families and their children, not least “to help them settle” at night. The medicine cabinet of some doctors is better stocked than the local pharmacy.

Rules have been rigorously enforced following the case of Dr Harold Shipman case, a doctor who murdered hundreds of his patients. Prescribing for yourself, your family and your children falls outside “Good Medical Practice”. Where a doctor did this and the child died, he or she would not only be removed from the medical register but would face a charge of manslaughter.

With a part-time locum General Practitioner, the scandal would fade quickly. When it happens to a Consultant Cardiologist at a major teaching Hospital, the consequences would be wider reaching and longer lasting.

Teenagers pocketed Madeleine McCann collection cash

TWO teenagers who carried out a door-to-door collection for missing Madeleine McCann pocketed the cash.

Gareth Trainer, 19, and Dale Armstrong, 16, managed to get hold of just £4 before police were called in.

Trainer, of Hawick, Roxburghshire, was given 80 hours' community service at Jedburgh Sheriff Court after admitting obtaining money by fraud on September 13.

Armstrong got a similar sentence at a previous hearing where sheriff Kevin Drummond described the offence as "despicable".

Madeleine, three, disappeared on May 3, 2007, on a family holiday in the Algarve.
