Leicester Mercury: Another nail in the coffin for Kate and Gerry McCann from their local newspaper

Kate and Gerry McCann are fighting a decision by a Portuguese court to reverse their 2015 libel win against a former police chief over his claims about their daughter's disappearance, according to the Independent.
Reports say that the couple's lawyers have confirmed they will use money from the "Find Madeleine" fund to attempt to overturn the ruling and challenge claims by ex-detective Goncalo Amaral that they faked their daughter's abduction.

Madeleine went missing from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
In 2015 the couple launched a successful libel action case against Amaral's 2008 book. "The Truth of the Lie", in which he alleged that Madeleine, three, had died at their holiday flat and they had faked her kidnapping to cover up the tragedy.

But this was overturned by a lower court in April the following year, leaving them with potentially vast legal costs and the possibility of being sued by Mr Amaral.

Last month Portugal's Supreme Court rejected the McCann's libel appeal over the book.

The McCanns fresh legal bid is reportedly based on comments made by the judges in the 76-page ruling, which stated the decision "was determined by the fact that public prosecutors hadn't managed to obtain sufficient evidence of the crimes by the appellants". (Because the McCanns refused to cooperate with the investigation and didn't ask for the investigation to remain open!)

Both were at one stage official suspects for a day (not true) in July 2008 following the adduction.

Judges have said the archiving of the criminal case did not equate to the McCanns being cleared of criminal responsibility.

"In truth, that ruling was not made in virtue of Portugal's Public Prosecution Service having acquired the conviction that the appellants hadn't committed a crime," they wrote.

"Even the archive ruling raises serious concerns relating to the truth of the allegation that Madeleine was kidnapped."

They also found Mr Amaral's book had "no defamatory intention" behind it.

"Our opinion is that rather than an injurious animus, the intention was informative and defensive," they said.
In a statement after the ruling, The McCanns said: "What we have been told by our lawyers is obviously extremely disappointing.

"We will of course be discussing the implications of the Supreme Court ruling with our lawyers in due course."

Leicester Mercury: Proof of their determination (to stay out of jail?)

Some people were very quick to think the worst about how the fund set up to find missing Madeleine McCann would be used.

This newspaper's website was bombarded by ill-intentioned people who seemed to take pleasure in seeking to do down the efforts of Kate and Gerry McCann to find their daughter and to question their motives. (Nooooo. Really?)

The release of detailed accounts of the fund for the financial year ending last March 31 should give these malicious detractors pause for thought. (Erm, no it doesn't. It reinforces thoughts, actually, that they are thieving, lying bastards)

The fund was launched a fortnight after the little girl, then aged three, vanished from Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, on May 3, 2007. Readers of this newspaper were very quick to rally round in response to our armbands appeal – and the significant amount raised in that way is acknowledged in the accounts. But the most important details are those covering how much was spent and how the money was used. (You mean, like mortgage payments and £37k spent on a website?)

As we would expect, search fees, detectives' bills, legal costs and the actual running of the high-profile campaign make up the bulk of the £815,000 spent on trying to trace Madeleine. (And still no sign of Maddie, although Eddie and Keela have a good idea what happened to her.)

The McCanns always said that how the money was used would be made public for all to see and they have been true to their word.

Every penny has been properly accounted for and the fund has been independently audited. We hope this disclosure reassure any doubters – and help to encourage people to continue their support for this missing Leicestershire child. (Yeah, right)

McCanns to scale down search for Maddie to concentrate on police files

The Parents of Madeleine McCann have scaled down the Portuguese search for their daughter to concentrate on sifting through the official police files into the disappearance.

The couple are continuing to work with a small investigative team - including members with policing experience - to work through the pages of files handed over to them earlier this year.

SEARCH FOR MADELEINE - 588 DAYS

The search of data accumulated by Portuguese Police during their investigation has been under way since August and is expected to last until at least the New Year, their official spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said.

It had been thought they would have finished scouring the records by Christmas.

Mr. Mitchell said Kate and Gerry - who live with their twin children Sean and Amelie in Rothley - were still in touch with two detective agencies they had worked with in the past.

Metodo 3, in Barcelona, and Oakley International in he USA, are no longer contracted to the family but he said the McCanns were ready to call them in if and when any new leads appeared.

Last month, the McCanns said they were personally overseeing the job of combing through the 17 volumes of official documents.

Today Mr Mitchell said, "They are still going through the files.

"I imagine that will take at least until January or February.

"They are going through them as best they can, although the files are not revealing a great dea, which is depressing in a way.

"But they are still ploughing on and hope they weill have something positive by the end, to take the search on.

"Metodo 3's contract finished months ago, but it is still available if we need work done on the ground in Spain.

"We took out a contract with Oakley International which lasted six months.

"It did a lot of good work ruling stuff out, but is not under contract at present.

"Now, the operation has effectively been taken in-house and there is a small team of people supporting Kate and Gerry - some of them with previous policing experience."

Mr Mitchell said Christmas would be a private affair for the McCanns this year.

There are, however, plans to issue a worldwide television appeal to jog people's minds over the festive season.

An as yet unnamed sports person or celebrity is understood to be lined up for the appeal.

Mr Mitchell said, "We don't know what the appeal is going to look like yet and we're not going to release it until close to Christmas.

"Christmas for the family will be private."
