Mother from 'tough district' arrested for leaving three children home alone - while McCanns from middle-class cul-de-sac still get away with it

Three young sisters found home alone on Christmas Eve... so police have whip-round to buy them presents and a tree.

Police staff and officers clubbed together to buy the girls Christmas presents
Three young girls were found home alone and apparently abandoned on Christmas Eve, it emerged yesterday. The youngsters had been left with no presents to open and no tree to cheer them up.
While police officers tracked down and arrested their mother on suspicion of neglect, their colleagues organised a whip-round and dashed to the shops before they closed for Christmas to buy some last minute gifts for the girls.
The incident happened in Gorton – the tough district of South Manchester which originally formed the backdrop of the Channel 4 comedy series Shameless.
Yesterday, after the sisters – all aged under ten – were placed into care, the police support staff spoke of their heartbreak at learning the girls had faced missing out on Christmas.
After a call was made about the trio's welfare, police officers were sent round to the house and found them by themselves with no one apparently looking after them, no Christmas tree and no presents.
With just hours to go before the shops shut, call handling staff clubbed together to try and ensure they didn't face a totally miserable Christmas Day.
Pam Wild, 50, said: 'I just couldn't bear the thought of the children waking up on Christmas morning with no presents, so me and some of the girls had a whip-round and got them some gifts.'
Officers also donated money and a member of staff dashed to a nearby supermarket to buy clothes and toys for the girls.
Mrs Wild wrapped the presents when she got home from work and they were delivered to the sisters on Christmas Day, by which time they had been placed into care.
'It was just something that anybody would have done,' she said. 'I love children and it wasn't their fault that they didn't get any presents.
'It was amazing to see that everyone had been so generous.
'I know this happens to thousands of people each year but I just couldn't wake up on Christmas Day knowing that these girls weren't going to get anything.'
Her boss, Andrew Massey, said: 'Our staff have gone out of their way to try and make it feel like Christmas for some children and it is nice to see this kind of spirit still exists in this time.'
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'Police were called to an address in Gorton on Christmas Eve following concerns for three children. 'A 29-year-old woman who was arrested for neglect has been bailed until February 11.'
The case recalls the plot of the film Home Alone in which an eight-year-old boy, played by Macaulay Culkin, is accidentally left behind when his family fly out for a Christmas holiday.
He ends up fending for himself and fighting off burglars.

And lots of reward money for your child neglecting mates too.

If you live in one of these and you neglect your kids, you'll go to prison

So, it's best to get a house like Kate and Gerry's and get the public to pay for it.

And make sure you also have plenty of these sort of people around.

Sorted.

Dr David Payne reply: "Mm, err Madeleine’s err a very striking err beautiful child, I’d almost if I want a better phrase call her doll-like, you know she was very, you know I think, you know very unique looking child err, she’d got very pretty, you know blonde hair err in a bob, she was quite a petite err child and you know she was very bubbly, very err you know she was a very good child to, to interact with. She was very bright, you could have a lot of fun with Madeleine err and you know she, she was, you know Kate and Gerry’s, you know pride and joy. They’d had a lot of trouble conceiving, you know with IVF and everything and you know Madeleine was their miracle. She was obviously very unique with the fact that she’d got the, you know the iris defect err but you know she was certainly a happy go lucky child you know she was, she would interact with the other children very well, as I said on the other, earlier recording, you know she played very happily with Lily and you know indeed the other children. She was, you know, very, she is a very beautiful child and good fun.”

'Retired' UK police 'follow new leads' - yawn, here we go again

Stoopid Brits will fall for anything!
By Rod Chaytor

30/12/2008

Callers claiming to have fresh information on missing Madeleine McCann have come forward after a new appeal by her parents.

Potential sightings and other leads are being followed up by a British team of former detectives who specialise in cold cases.

Parents Kate and Gerry, both 40, were delighted with the public response to their Christmas appeal, when they released a previously unseen video of their daughter.

Thousands logged on to http://www.findmadeleine.com to hear the couple's message: "This is our second Christmas without Madeleine. Please help us make sure we don't have a third."

Their spokesman said yesterday: "Kate and Gerry are pleased because the new material has achieved the desired response."

The couple spent Christmas at home in Rothley, Leics, with their twins, three. Madeleine vanished in Portugal days before her fourth birthday.

History of a failure

by Marisa Rodrigues*

Precipitation, political pressures, manipulation, subservience to England and excessive media exposure dictated the failure of the investigation that made rivers of ink flow. The trace of Madeleine Beth McCann was lost at the age of three on the 3rd of May 2007, in Praia da Luz, near Lagos.

Archived due to a lack of evidence, the process leaves deep marks in the history of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), that revealed itself as weak and permeable. It exposed the lack of independence of the institution, as well as its difficulty in dealing with an adverse environment of which there is no shortage of examples – the absence of cooperation from the British police and diligences that the PJ failed to carry out after refusals from the Public Ministry and from the Instruction judge in Portimão.

For the first time ever, the Judiciária was scrutinised and under attack from various fronts, both inside and outside of the institution. With the British ambassador travelling from Lisbon to Praia da Luz, in order to publicly support the McCann couple, in the name of his country’s government, the route that would lead to a dead end was starting to form. During the days after the disappearance, the PJ was forced to announce that Madeleine had been abducted, that there was already a suspect and a photofit. False. A short while later, the will of the English press was satisfied, with the forced nomination of a spokesman, an inspector who had nothing to do with the process.

The child’s parents didn’t help at all. Throughout multiple meetings, they insisted on the abduction theory and gave contradictory statements, just like the friends with whom they had been on holidays. Sending the biological residues to Birmingham was the ultimate shot in the foot. The results were late and inconclusive. Nothing changed, not even when the coordinator, Gonçalo Amaral, was dismissed, in October 2007, at a time when the theory of accidental homicide was gaining strength. Unable to handle the “lack of support”, he retired early and wrote a book, “The Truth of the Lie”, in order to publicise his theory. This year, during the era of Paulo Rebelo (who was nominated by the PJ to lead the Portimão department and to direct the investigation), the process did end up being archived. Thus the “prophecy” of the Attorney General, Pinto Monteiro, who announced “fearing” an unsuccessful investigation in May, came true. Three months [earlier], the then National Director of the PJ, Alípio Ribeiro, had already admitted that there had been “precipitation” in making Kate and Gerry arguidos.

Kate McCann: "Whoever Madeleine's with, she'll be giving them her tuppence worth"

Here's a few photo's of paedophiles, like the one Kate and Gerry say Madeleine is giving her 'tuppence worth" to. On the one hand they say Maddie is with a paedophile and on the other they say they are scaling down the search for her. Would you be able to scale down the search for your three year old who you believed was with someone like this?

Or would you be demanding that the PJ re-open the investigation? Or would you be making a formal request for the British police to find her? Maybe go back to Portugal to answer the 48 questions or agree to take part in the reconstruction? Anything, in fact, that would help find Madeleine? As Kate says "There's been an evil crime committed" - so why are they not demanding she is found? Why are they leaving ALL stones unturned and refusing to co-operate with the police? Why are they so silent despite their arguido status being removed and are free from the Portuguese judicial secrecy laws and can now take part in television interviews and can freely answer any questions put to them by any interviewer? Why don't the McCanns want to co-operate with the search for their own three year old daughter?

Pope Benedict appeals for an end to child abuse in all its forms

By Phil Stewart

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Thursday he hoped Christmas would bring hope to those suffering from war, terrorism, injustice and poverty and appealed for peace in the Holy Land.

Pope Benedict led the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics into Christmas at a midnight mass in which he appealed for an end to child abuse in all its forms.

"Let us think of those street children who do not have the blessing of a family home," he said.

"Let us think of those children who are victims of the industry of pornography and every other appalling form of abuse, and thus are traumatized to the depths of their soul."

Benedict said Catholics had to "do everything in our power to put an end to the suffering of these children."

In the past year the Pope has repeatedly addressed the issue of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy, but did not raise it in his Christmas homily.

Benedict apologized for sexual abuse of minors by clergy and met victims during a July trip to Australia. He also met victims in the United States in April.

Madeleine McCann anniversary 'last chance' to appeal for information

The first anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance is the “last chance” to raise her profile on an international stage, her father said. (Except for the Christmas 2008 Appeal which was another "last chance", before the "last chance" second anniversary appeal and the "last chance" Christmas 2009 Appeal...)

By Caroline Gammell in Praia da Luz
Last Updated: 8:24PM BST 02 May 2008

Gerry McCann and wife Kate have gone on a media offensive to highlight their missing daughter in the days leading up to May 3, 12 months after she vanished from their holiday apartment in the Algarve.

Knowing that the media spotlight would be on them as the anniversary approached, the couple have used the milestone to appeal for information.

“This is the last chance in terms of international reach,” Mr McCann told ITN.

“We have got to appeal as far and as wide as possible. We need that reach with the focus at this time.”

In back-to-back television and print interviews, the couple was repeatedly asked why they left Madeleine in the unlocked apartment and how they cope with the criticism of that decision.

Mr McCann, 39, said: “We can’t change things, if we had known it wasn’t safe, we never would have left her.

(Kate's Maddie holiday premonition)

“We can’t change that fact and we have to live with that on a daily basis. We don’t need reminding.”

Mrs McCann, 40, added: “Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I couldn’t love Madeleine any more than I do. If we had had any idea there was an element of risk, then we wouldn’t have done it.

(Kate McCann: "They'd been watching us for a matter of days, I'm sure")

“There's been an evil crime committed here, a hideous crime. It's just so important to concentrate on that.

"We've got to live with ourselves for that misjudgement but really the focus should be on that person who's out there."

Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley in Leicestershire, said they still believe Madeleine is still alive.

To coincide with the anniversary, the couple have released a new missing poster and a telephone number to contact with information.

Mr McCann said he feared his daughter’s abductor might strike again: “That person's still out there and will probably do this again.”

The couple said moments in the last year had proved “almost unbearable”, but they had sought strength from their other two children, three-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Mrs McCann told GMTV: “We have had moments when it all gets too much and you would like to pull a duvet over but you can’t. You have to keep going.

“It’s Madeleine and the rest of the family that drives you on.”

Her husband added: “There are days and nights when you think I just don’t want to wake up tomorrow, I can’t take it any more.

“We get strength from each other and support each other and the family.”

Maddie shows us the true farce of Christmas hope

So the McCanns have made their Christmas appeal for help and information, despite already having a team of private investigators who obviously haven't found anything or why else would the McCanns still be asking for help?

They've already spent over £1million on a fruitless search so why are they asking the public to donate more money?

The McCanns also don't seem to have made a formal request to the British police, as Goncalo advised them to do - which could provide them with the information they ask for.

They also failed to request, by the September 20 deadline, that the PJ keep the investigation open to find their lovely daughter.

They have failed to answer police questions, they have refused to take part in a police reconstruction, failed to tell the truth in statements and admitted they've not even physically searched for their own daughter themselves.

Instead they release footage of Maddie where we are able to hear her voice and see the way she behaves - but why wait 19 months to release this footage when it would have been more useful as soon as Maddie (cough) 'disappeared'?

So, if they won't enlist the help of the police who have invaluable resources, and the private investigators haven't found anything in 19 months at a cost of £1million... who are they actually appealing to for help?

Joe Public? What makes them think Joe Public can find their daughter any better than the police or private investigators could?

The McCanns are well aware of the many forums and bloggers who are painstakingly sieving through all the police DVD files, which includes translating them from Portuguese. Those people are leaving no stone unturned in the search for the truth about what happened to their daughter. And they're doing it for free.

The McCanns ask for help, and help is what we're giving them.

But it's the wrong kind of help though, isn't it, because they're not in the least bit grateful for all the hard work. In fact they seem to hate us for it! Funnily enough, they also seem to hate Gonçalo Amaral, too.

Why are the McCanns so ungrateful to those who CAN help and DO help?

Obviously it's because they don't want our kind of help, which can only mean they don't want Maddie found. And if they don't want Maddie found, then why do they keep asking for help, particularly from people who can't give the kind of help that the police can?

Gonçalo Amaral registered an account on The 3 Arguidos forum to personally thank members for their excellent work. Why can't the McCanns personally thank those same people for their excellent work in helping to look for their daughter? People have spent hundreds of hours, in the past 19 months, trying to find out what happened to their daughter and not once have they said thank you.

So what do the McCanns really want? It can only be money, can't it? Money for what? Their private investigation has already proved worthless. The British and Portuguese police would investigate the case at the taxpayer's expense, so why not ask them?

Even though the McCanns have already received millions of pounds from the public, and Brian Kennedy has pledged his personal fortune to them for however long it takes, it's still not enough for them is it? They have used some of the public donations to pay their mortgage and still they want more.

That's because they are insatiable, lying, thieving bastards without a conscience who are doing everything possible to deny their daughter the justice she deserves whilst trying to save their own necks.

Let's hope 2009 pricks their consciences into taking postive action for Maddie.

Which bed did 'Maddie' really sleep in last?

Goldilocks Ripperana: The True Crime Mystery Magazine

By Dr. Martin Roberts

October-December edition No. 66, 2008

A statement made public earlier this year by Kate McCann suggests that Madeleine was not taken from her own bed in Praia da Luz, but from her mother's.

Answering the by-now-familiar question of her responsibility for leaving the children unattended, she concludes by asking, "Is it right for somebody to go into your apartment and take your child out (of) your bed?"

This astonishing slip of the tongue casts immediate doubt on the scenario of the abduction through the window of the child's bedroom on the night of May 3 last year. The parents' bedroom was adjacent to the patio doors (through which an abductor was eventually held to have entered) and Kate is reported to have explained to police the circumstances in which one or other child had already slept with them on the two previous nights; a practice that continued afterwards with the twins, 'for comfort'.

Although the possibility of abduction seems still to exist, Kate's unguarded remark leads to a question of considerable significance; Why should anyone choose to fabricate a crime somewhere if a genuine instance of the same thing has actually occurred nearby? Such misdirection would only make sense if conducted by someone involved in both activities and the true misdemeanour were of a different nature.

A false abduction on the one hand and a non-abduction on the other would together amount to no abduction at all.

Can this extraordinary perspective be corroborated in any way, and what might that mean for the long-held sequestration theory in the case of missing Madeleine McCann?

Proving a negative postulate can be difficult. Faced with the McCann's claim of abduction, the onus was upon Portuguese investigators, either to furnish a lead to Madeleine's whereabouts or prove she had not been snatched. In the event they could do neither. But 'difficult' does not equal impossible. As the saying has it, 'The difficult we do on demand. The impossible takes a little longer.' Proving the nul-hypothesis in this instance may turn out to have been merely difficult after all.

It is now widely known that two British sniffer dogs were taken to Portugal to assist the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and while some might consider evidence from sniffer dogs to be unreliable, denying the superior olfactory capabilities of dogs per se would be akin to dismissing a bat's feats of echo location. Man has successfully exploited the gifts of other animal species since the dawn of civilisation: Bees provide honey, geese once successfully served ancient Rome as lookouts, sacrificial songbirds have saved the lives of miners and early submariners alike. Nowadays sniffer dogs are routinely used to detect drugs, plastic explosives, fire accelerants and, of course, missing people. Hence, if a dog signals the presence of a specific scent in an unusual context, then it is entirely reasonable to consider the scent present. Dogs, unlike people, do not know how to lie. The cadaver dog employed in Portugal was no different in these important respects.

It is not however necessary to postulate a death, or levy accusations of culpable homicide, in order to progress toward an alternative explanation of Madeleine McCann's disappearance from apartment 5a. Nor is it necessary to couch discussion of the cadaver dog's behaviour in terms of corpses, despite the specificity of the odour he was trained to detect. In deference to the sensibilities of others, and for the purpose of this discussion, we may suppose, to perfectly good effect, that the dog indicated an odour with a neutral connotation; essence of lavender, for instance. Surprisingly perhaps, one need not establish, or even assume, that the scent either originated with the missing child or was somehow shared by her.

Whereabouts at the apartment was the identifiable scent detected? Predominantly on floor surfaces in and around the parents' bedroom, also on Madeleine's favourite soft toy, the last recorded position of which was adjacent to the pillow at the head of the child's bed. Hence 'lavender' was present on several immovable surfaces and one very portable one. Now, imagine you are on the point of concluding a 100 piece jig-saw puzzle, of which you had only 99 pieces at the outset. Two gaps remain to be filled, one within a white cloud, the other within an area of blue sky. The only piece you have left is blue. Where do you place it? In the space identified by the most appropriate context, obviously.

Madeleine is reported by her parents to have slept with her soft toy. But the only dormitory in which the 'essence of lavender' features as fixed is theirs, not hers. Furthermore, according to an August 2007 report in the Sunday Mirror, Kate McCann knew instantly that Madeleine had been abducted when she saw that the toy had been moved from her sleeping daughter's arms and placed on a ledge way beyond the four-year-old's reach. Judging from police photographs, there is no such ledge in the children's bedroom, but there appears to be something of the kind in the parents' room, pictured with an article of clothing laying on it.

Taken together, these observations should be sufficient to locate the soft toy in the parents' bedroom initially, not the one in which it was later photographed.

But what of Madeleine?

The same Sunday Mirror article quotes a police source as saying: "When Kate tucked Madeleine up in bed earlier in the evening she had the toy tightly in her arms as she did every night." If Madeleine held the toy in her arms every night, then wherever the toy went to bed so did the child. If the toy can be placed in the parents' bedroom, metaphorically speaking, so too can Madeleine McCann, and the situational 'double negative' alluded to previously becomes altogether more robust.

Kate McCann's all important remark is therefore substantiated. Madeleine, it seems, was not abducted from her own bed, in which case she was not abducted at all and the McCanns have been declared innocent of involvement in a crime that did not take place.

NHS trainee nurse turned paedophile royal butler: even those with powerful connections get caught eventually

A paedophile royal butler who took one of his victims for tea with the Queen Mother has been jailed for 12 years today for a string of historic sexual offences against young boys.

Described by police as a "brilliant groomer", Paul Kidd, 55, of Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, even took one of his victims for tea with the Queen Mother.

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar told him: "You were someone who had influenced your victims to such an extent they were under your spell.

"They would do anything you asked them to do.

"I regard you as someone who is dangerous and presents a risk to all the young people you may come across."

Kidd started grooming one of the boys when he was aged 12 as he met him as a patient on a hospital ward where he worked as a trainee nurse.

Another was 14 years old when he first spoke to Kidd on the CB radio airwave, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

The defendant was senior footman to the Queen Mother from 1979 to 1984 and previously worked as a royal butler to The Queen from 1977.

He gave Kidd an indeterminate sentence and recommended that he remain in prison for at least six years for public protection until he could be considered for parole.

The former candidate for the UK Independence Party was caught after one of his three abuse victims read a newspaper interview which he gave on the 10th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

His boasts about his royal connections, coming from a man who also had his own website, www.royalbutler.co.uk, led the complainant to contact police.

The victim, now aged in his 40s, reported he had been indecently assaulted by Kidd at the butler's home in the early 1980s when he was as young as 13.

An investigation was launched and evidence of further abuse was uncovered during a search of his home in Castlehall View.

Among items found on his computer were 18,019 images of unknown children and a video recording of him abusing another youngster as recently as 2006.

Many of the images recovered were encrypted in computer files with the password "Pickles" - thought to be a reference to a royal corgi. His third victim, who was treated to the royal tea party, came forward after reading publicity on the case when Kidd was charged by police.

Kidd pleaded guilty to nine counts of indecent assault, six counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

He also admitted 11 counts of making indecent images of a child and two counts of possessing indecent images of children.

The offences were committed between 1974 and 1977, 1981 and 1983 - when he was in the employ of the Queen Mother - and 2005 to 2008.

Kidd introduced his most recent victim to a friend, David Hobday, who also abused the youngster.

Melanie Jones: when a mother loses a child

THE mother of murdered Rhys Jones says she will never forgive her son’s killer. The family is now planning to leave Croxteth Park, where they have lived for 18 years, saying they could never rebuild their lives in the area.

Speaking out for the first time since Sean Mercer, 18, was sentenced last Tuesday to a minimum of 22 years in prison for the killing, Melanie Jones said she hopes he is never released.

She said she was filled with hatred as she looked at Mercer when the guilty verdicts were read out at Liverpool Crown Court.

“I now realise that I hate him. I will never forgive him for destroying our family. I will hate him for the rest of my life,” she said.

She added she feels “nothing but contempt” for those who protected him. Mrs Jones said: “The families of those who committed this crime are outside our realm of understanding.

“Parents must take responsibility for their children and what they do.”

In an interview with a Sunday newspaper yesterday, she describes Mercer as having “a total lack of regard for human life”.

Mrs Jones revealed the family had received thousands of messages of support, including a hand-written letter from Kate and Gerry McCann.
