Child neglect pays: How to let a baby die but still walk away with a six figure pay off

Council chiefs at the authority responsible for protecting tragic toddler Baby P were sacked today after a damning report into its failings in the months before his death.

Head of children's services at Haringey Council Sharon Shoesmith was immediately removed from her £100,000 position.

Council leader George Meehan and the cabinet member for children Liz Santry both resigned because of the scandal.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls sacked head of children's services Sharon Shoesmith and immediately replaced the management team with new experts.

However, Mrs Shoesmith, 55, could be in line for a six-figure severance package including several months' salary and a gold-plated pension deal if she goes.

A senior council official said she was likely to be offered the deal to avoid a costly and potentially embarrassing legal battle.
